2-stroke fuel mix calculator

Chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers, dirt bikes and outboards with 2-stroke engines need oil mixed into the gasoline. The ratio, such as 50:1, means 50 parts gas to 1 part oil, so the oil is the gas divided by 50. FuelMixCalc does that division in whatever units you have, and can also work backwards from a bottle of oil or check a can you already mixed.

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

One US gallon is 128 fluid ounces, so a gallon at 50:1 takes 2.56 fl oz (about 76 ml) of oil.

How the fuel mix calculator works

FuelMixCalc treats a ratio such as 50:1 as 50 volumes of gasoline to 1 volume of oil. The oil needed is the gasoline divided by the ratio; the gasoline for a bottle of oil is the oil times the ratio; and the ratio of an existing mix is the gasoline divided by the oil. Everything is converted to millilitres first, using 1 US gallon = 128 US fl oz = 3.785 L, 1 imperial gallon = 4.546 L and 1 US fl oz = 29.57 ml.

Mix in a clean, approved fuel can: add the oil, then half the gas, shake, then the rest of the gas and shake again. Mixed fuel keeps about 30 days unless you add a stabilizer, and ethanol-free or pre-mixed canned fuel lasts longer. Shake the can before each refill.

Use the ratio and the oil type (for example JASO FD or TC-W3 for outboards) your engine’s manual specifies. The wrong mix can damage an engine and void a warranty.

    Frequently asked questions

How much oil do I mix with 1 gallon of gas?

2.56 fl oz at 50:1, 3.2 fl oz at 40:1, 4 fl oz at 32:1 and 5.1 fl oz at 25:1.

How much 2-stroke oil per litre?

20 ml per litre at 50:1, 25 ml at 40:1 and about 31 ml at 32:1.

What ratio does my engine need?

Use the ratio in your owner’s manual or on the fuel cap. Many modern handheld tools are 50:1; older equipment is often 32:1 or 40:1.
